Evangelism and Discipleship

Before Jesus ascended into heaven He left His disciples with a mandate:

"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." (Mat 28:19-20)

That seems a little overwhelming, doesn't it? Going to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them, and teaching them to obey everything God says...and it is. But there's some great news here in this passage. Often times we think in order to put this verse in to practice we need to pack our bags and buy a flight to some foreign country. But that's not what Jesus is saying. Jesus says "as you are going, make disciples..." Our English translations make it seem like "Go!" is the mandate, but the mandate is actually "make disciples as you are going". The beauty of this is you don't have to go anywhere other than the places you are already going. As you go to work, as you go grocery shopping, as you carpool with friends, or attend sporting events for your kids, make disciples.

But the verse continues with an even better truth: "I am with you always." Praise God that as we live this life, as we attend our jobs, our families, our daily activities, whatever it is - Jesus is with us!
